Imagine a trip that not only changes your life, but the lives of those you meet along the way…?

Bahati Fund is a US-registered 501(c)3 organization focused on funding and developing public health, education, livelihoods and conservation programs and initiatives in the communities in which we visit and work. Every trip we design at Archipelagos and Archipelagos Africa goes to help support Bahati Ltd & our partners.

We created Bahati Fund back in 2017 because we recognize the positive impact thoughtful tourism can have on our favorite, wild and incredibly special destinations. We have seen it first-hand in communities across Africa where we’ve worked since 2003. Whether it’s job creation in rural communities, access to healthcare or wildlife conservation, our travel dollar can multiply in the most beautiful of ways if we understand how and where to spend it. And we’re here to help you do just that.

About 70 cents of every dollar (USD) you spend on your Archipelagos trip stays in the local communities you visit. We empower you as both an adventurer and steward of the world’s wonders. We are working to change the travel game from a zero-sum one, to one where everyone benefits.

We are guided by many different principles, including our own on-the-ground field work, 16+ years of hands-on program development and impact evaluations and our love of the world’s wild places. We work to empower women and youth; historically the most un- and underemployed demographic around the world. Tourism and hospitality is the largest industry employing women and youth- but we can do better. We work with suppliers that

  1. Employ women and youth.

  2. Promote women and youth to leadership and management positions

  3. Hire locally for 80%+ of their staff

  4. Contribute locally to educational initiatives that keep girls in school

Through our work at Bahati Fund, we also support the following Sustainable Development Goals

  1. SDG 4: Quality Education - This goal aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. It specifically emphasizes the importance of providing equal access to education for girls and women and ensuring that youth have the skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship.

  2. SDG 5: Gender Equality - This goal focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. It seeks to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls, promote their full and effective participation in decision-making, and ensure their equal access to education, employment, and health care.

  3. SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth - This goal focuses on promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. It aims to increase the number of jobs in the travel and tourism industry and promote sustainable tourism practices.

  4. SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities - This goal aims to reduce inequalities within and among countries. It emphasizes the importance of empowering and promoting the social, economic, and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or economic or other status.

  5. SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production - This goal aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. In the context of travel and tourism, it means promoting sustainable tourism practices that reduce the environmental impact of the industry.

  6. SDG 14: Life Below Water - This goal focuses on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources. In the context of travel and tourism, it means promoting sustainable marine tourism practices that protect marine life and ecosystems.

  7. SDG 15: Life on Land - This goal aims to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss. In the context of travel and tourism, it means promoting sustainable tourism practices that protect natural habitats and biodiversity.
